My senior capstone project, HYO, is a culmination of of all my interests: design, illustration, craftsmanship, and Korean folklore. HYO is the Korean term for “filial duty.”

While pursuing my second major in East Asian Studies, I learned through traditional Korean folktales what it meant to be an honorable child to my parents. My grandparents moved in with my family when I was 13 years old, so I had seen glimpses of this flilial piety in my parents, but I was only able to attach a word to it as a college student. HYO is something I want to honor in my own life. While I have a long ways to go, I dedicated this book to my parents to thank them for raising me and supporting me thus far.

This illustrated book contains three traditional Korean folktales, all discussing different angles of HYO. All illustrations are made out of cut paper, and feature animal characters to add to the whimsy and playfulness of the overall book. While playful, this book is intended for an audience of all ages, as it covers a topic that we can reflect on at any point in life.

Photos of the original cutouts and exhibition display are featured below.

This book was bound and designed by me.
